HERB FARM BUSINESS FOR SALE
We, the creators and owners of Hazelwood Herb Farm recently decided to put the business up for sale. The main deciding factor was that we both want to retire and have time to travel. After spending the last twenty three years of our lives starting, and building up the business it is time to let go and move on. Since the word spread of the impending sale the reaction from customers has been very interesting to say the least. Rumors ran rampant as to why we were selling and as the story was passed from one person to another it got further and further from the truth. So we decided to put up this page so that customers far and wide would all have the same information. It has been very humbling to witness the fierce loyalty displayed by our customers. Over the years it would seem that Hazelwood has grown in to a household name and the fact that it may no longer be around has drawn interesting and strong reactions. Comments have ranged from "you can't possibly sell the farm," to why are you selling such a popular business," and "you are too young to retire"! It was not a decision that was made lightly and it is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we are letting go of our dream. Starting with only an old cow pasture and a budget of $2,000, we have put in thousands of hours each, in building up Hazelwood to what it is today. Sales have increased every year since opening and now that the infrastructure is all in place yearly expenses have decreased. Financial statements will be made available to qualified purchasers.
To encourage the person(s) buying the business to carry on the tradition, we are offering an intensive training package as part of the sale price, if desired. All the recipes for the products developed over the years that so many of you enjoy, are also included. We feel that we have taken the business as far as we can and that it is time for someone younger to take over. To that end, we are often asked what we would do if we were younger and wanted to run it for a longer period of time. Or to put it another way what would we recommend to the new owners.
Build a new kitchen and turn the old kitchen in to an extension of the store. The store is too small as it is to properly display all the products, and limits us from creating and selling a larger range of products.
Investigate the possibility of building a tea house and workshop area for groups. This would also encourage more bus tours to visit the farm
Design a virtual store on our website and start marketing the products world wide on the internet. Especially some of the medicinal creams as we already sell many via email orders.
Expand the heated greenhouse area to allow propagation of more plant stock as well as more varieties of herbs. As we grow nearly all of our own plants it is becoming very difficult to keep up with demand.
Wholesale products to other stores outside our normal customer area.
Details on the house and property can be viewed at the listing realtor website at Island Homes Realty There is also a video tour available at this link. This is a very unique business so here are a few more details of the sale.
Apart from the land, house and outbuildings the following are included as part of the package
All finished products in the store as well as materials and containers to make more products.
Nursery stock of over 500 varieties of herbs and numerous large mother plants used for propagation.
Tools and equipment used on a daily basis to run the business
Computerised databases of products and plants
Detailed instruction in the day to day running of the business. This will include plant propagation, how to make all of the products, wholesale suppliers, bookkeeping, staff and anything else to keep it running smoothly.
As the business has developed over such a long period of time it has allowed us to fine tune and run it in a very efficient manner. It is so highly organised that customers are often amazed there are not legions of workers involved in the running of the farm. There are two staff and two owners. Between us we work a total of 17 days a week. That is just over four days per person. May and December require more hours as they are extremely busy months.
We sincerely hope that this will enlighten you the customer or a potential purchaser. It has been a wonderful journey and we thank everyone for all the support over the years. Please do not contact us directly at the farm regarding this listing as we honestly do not have time to talk to everyone who is interested. Instead contact the listing realtors Sue Perrey and Luke Kolk at 250-245-1111 or toll free at 1-888-206-0456
